Despite the political uncertainties and the weakness of world trade, Germany's exports reached a new record level last year. The companies exported goods valued at 1.2075 trillion euros, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden on Thursday. Imports also reached a new record high of 954.6 billion euros. Thus, the best value of around 1.19 trillion euros from 2015 was once again exceeded.
But the exporting companies look with concern in the future. The industry is particularly concerned about the protectionist policy of US President Donald Trump, who has been in office since January 20th. "In view of the close ties with the USA, much is at stake for German companies," says Anton Börner, President of the Foreign Trade Association BGA. Many hundreds of thousands of jobs depended on the fact that European companies could sell their products in the United States and invested American companies in Europe.
